How to reach Osijek

ARRIVAL
Osijek is located at the crossroads between central and south-eastern Europe, halfway between the capital cities of Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. By car, it takes about 2.5 hours from Zagreb, Belgrade, and Budapest to Osijek, and about 4 hours from Sarajevo. The distance from the border with Hungary is 50 km, from Serbia 35 km, and from Bosnia and Herzegovina 100 km.
Osijek is connected to Zagreb and other major cities in Croatia by direct railway lines and frequent bus routes (see below). Public transport to the capital cities of neighbouring countries requires a transfer.
Domestic air routes connect Osijek with Zagreb, Rijeka, Split, and Dubrovnik, while international departure airports are Stuttgart (DE), Köln/Bonn (DE), and Basel (CH)/Mulhouse (FRA)/Freiburg (DE). Osijek is also relatively easily accessible from airports in Zagreb (HR), Budapest (HU), Belgrade (SRB), and Tuzla (BiH).
BY PLANE
Airport Osijek is located along the state road D2, direction Osijek – Vukovar, in the Klisa village, 15 km from the city center. Here you can find information about the timetable.
Direct flights to the Osijek airport are possible on certain days from the following cities: Zagreb, Rijeka, Split, Dubrovnik, Milano, München, London. Please see more here.
Arrival to the city from the airport:
Transport from the airport to the railway station is organized 15 to 20 minutes after the passengers leave the plane. For transport it is mandatory to make a reservation 24 hours in advance. Reservation is possible each working day from Monday to Friday from 7am to 3pm using the phone number +385 (0) 31 514 400 or via e-mail: info@osijek-airport.hr.

Transport of passengers from the railway station to the airport is organized 1.5 hours prior to the departure of the airplane. For transport it is mandatory to make a reservation 24 hours before the flight every day from Monday to Friday from 7am to 3pm using the phone number +385 (0) 31 514 400 or via the e-mail address info@osijek-airport.hr.
BY CAR
From the west, use the A3-A5 highways (Ljubljana, SLO – Zagreb – Slavonski Brod – Đakovo – Osijek). From the west and east, use the D2 state road (Graz, A – Maribor, SLO – Varaždin – Koprivnica – Virovitica – Našice – Osijek – Vukovar – Ilok – Novi Sad, SRB – Belgrade, SRB). From the south and north, use the D7 state road or A5 highway (Bosanski Šamac, BiH – Slavonski Šamac – Đakovo – Osijek – Beli Manastir – Pečuh, HU – Budapest, HU).
BY TRAIN
Passenger rail transport in the Republic of Croatia is provided by the company HŽ – Putnički prijevoz d.o.o. (Croatian Railways). You can travel directly by train to Osijek from the cities of Zagreb, Split, and Pula. BY BUS
There are several bus companies providing passenger transportation to Osijek, as well as to major cities in other parts of Croatia, such as Flix Bus and Arriva Express.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND MOVING AROUND THE CITY
TRAMS AND BUSES
The easiest way to get around the city is by public transport, tram and bus transport company GPP – Gradski prijevoz putnika Ltd. You can buy the tickets in each tram or bus, as well as in the newsstands and the GPP shops in Remiza (tram shed) and under the main square.

The ticket, which is valid for 1 h in all directions, costs €1.46 and you can buy it from the driver. You can also buy a daily ticket for €4.65 in the public transport company (GPP) costumer centre in the shopping mall under the main square. If you plan to stay more than 2 to 3 days, it is advisable to buy a “prepaid” card. You can buy the card at any newsstand “Tisak” or in the costumer centre. For each card you must pay a deposit of €2.65 which you can get back if you return the card and then put as much money on it as you might need for your rides. In this case each ride costs €1.06. When you enter the tram or bus you must validate it at the validating machine at the driver’s side and when you exit the vehicle, otherwise you will be charged extra.
KOMPA (FERRY)
One of the most popular ways to cross the river Drava from the Upper Town to the Tvrđavica village and the zoo is by the ferry Kompa. In September and October, Kompa runs every day from 9am to 8pm. It departs from Osijek (from the restaurant Kompa) as well as from Tvrđavica (from the Zoo) every 40 minutes. The ride is free of charge.
TAXI
The usual price for the taxi ride from point to point in the city varies per person/ride (not depending on the number of persons driving together). Passenger transport by taxi is possible on call or at some of the starting points in several places in the city: in front of the railway station, in front of the bus station, near the Croatian National Theatre building, and in front of the University of J. J. Strossmayer rectorate building Tvrđa.
