LOCAL CUISINE<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

Local cuisine is a mix of historical cultural influences in Slavonia and Baranja and customs that have been brought by people who moved from the other parts of Croatia, from the Adriatic coast, from Zagorje and Me\u0111imurje regions or from the country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the menu you will find dishes that will remind you of the old Austro-Hungarian era, but also on the fact that the city is located at the transition from Central to Eastern Europe with a strong Hungarian, Slavic, Germanic and even the Oriental (Ottoman \u2013 Turkish) influence. RESTAURANTS AND BEER TAVERNS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

Slavonia and Baranja and especially East region on the banks of the Drava and the Danube are known as a gastronomic destination for many domestic and foreign tourists. Citizens of Osijek equally like to visit local restaurants to honour themselves with the dishes that are less frequently prepared at home. These are primarily traditional dishes such as venison roasts and roasted premium fresh water fish or dishes from a kettle, fi\u0161 paprika\u0161 (fish stew), \u010dobanac and perkelt (both variations of goulash). In addition, restaurants in Osijek will often offer you with international cuisine as well as excellent dishes with signature of chefs in restaurants of high-class hotels. COFFEE & CAKES<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

Cakes and cookies that you will find in Osijek pastry shops and some cafes are often inspired by tradition with the addition of creativity of the bakers and in the larger bakeries you can look for excellent pastries. Some of the very popular cakes are Schwartzwald and Sacher cake and in many small family pastry shops we recommend you try the “typical Croatian” krem\u0161nita (Cremeschnitte, puff pastry base and custard cream) and \u0161ampita (whipped meringue dessert), baklava and various fruit cakes which are often rich in a cream of walnuts with homemade taste, just like it was when our mothers or grandmothers made it. BARS & PUBS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

The most popular places in town where you can enjoy a beer, coffee, juices, cocktails and other refreshing alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are along the Drava Promenade, in the Winter port, near the main square, near the Ljudevit Gaj Square in the Upper Town, the old town Tvr\u0111a and in the Ban Josip Jela\u010di\u0107 Square in the Lower Town. WINE AND BEER TASTING<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

From all sides the city of Osijek is surrounded by vast vineyards on the Danube river and on the slopes of Papuk mountain, where some of the most famous, largest and oldest (13th, 15th and 16th century) Croatian and even regional wineries produce their golden wine drops. But on the other hand, there are only two wine tasting bars in Osijek. The reason for this is the proximity of vintners and their wine cellars.
